5 Ways To Stay Cool And Keep Your Electric Bill Down
Summertime brings beautiful weather that lets you get out and do all kinds of things. Sadly, summer brings a whole lot of heat as well as higher electricity bills as your AC struggles to keep up with the temperature demands.
There are things that you can do that will help you to keep your power bills down during the summer. Most of the things you can do are relatively easy and are things that you can do on your own.
Add a Programmable Thermostat
This thermostat replaces your current thermostat. With one of these thermostats, you can precisely set the thermostat to the temperature you want. But more than that, you can set it so that thermostat will trigger your AC to turn on or off at a particular point in time.
For example, you can set your programmable thermostat so that it will let the temperature be set at a higher point while you are at work, then turn on the AC shortly before you come home to cool your house.
Cook Outside
When you cook inside, it will heat up your house quite a bit, especially if your oven is involved. That will force your air conditioner to work harder to keep you cool. One alternative to that is to use your grill and cook outside.
If you don't want to grill or you can't for some reason, you may want to cook late at night. Doing that will let the heat from cooking dissipate. Then when mealtime comes, you can just heat up the meal in the microwave.
Add a Fan
A fan is a great tool for a lower electricity bill. The fan does not change the air temperature. What it does is move the air around, which will have a cooling effect. You can use a portable fan that is able to be moved from room to room as necessary. Installing a ceiling fan can help as well.
If you do choose to get a ceiling fan, get one that will spin counterclockwise. That will help suck the cooler air up from near the floor and spread it through the room.
Cover Your Windows
The beautiful weather outside may tempt you to open up your blinds or curtains in order to take advantage of the sunlight. The problem is that those open curtains and blinds allow more than sunlight in. They also allow passive heating.
When you cover your windows up, you block that phenomenon. This is especially true for the south-facing side of your house, as that side of your house will get the most exposure to the sun.
Get Some LED Bulbs
You might not think that a simple light bulb switch will do a lot. However, LED bulbs are more energy-efficient and produce more light for less electricity. Part of that efficiency means they don't shed a lot of heat when they are on. Even just a little extra heat can add up across a lot of light bulbs.
The longer the older bulbs are on, the more extraneous heat they are going to put out, and the warmer your house will end up.
